    Three ways to work colorwork

    Tapestry, pixel or graphgan?

    • Tapestry Sunflower 🌻

      Tapestry crochet

Worked in tight stitches with the unused colors carried inside them, so no floats show. The chart is a grid where each square is one stitch, read row by row.

    • Pixel Cat 🐱

      Pixel crochet

Each square is treated as a pixel, so designs look like pixel art: game sprites, emoji, pets. StitchOwl draws the pixel grid; use it for stitches or to place mini squares.

    • Tapestry Mushroom 🍄

      Graphgan

A blanket worked from a graph, often with a bobbin or separate strand for each block of color. Charts run large, so the size table below helps you plan one.

    Plan your colors

See every color change before you start

    • Row-by-row color runs in working order, like “S×4, Y×3, B×4”.

    • Stitch counts per color in the legend, so you know which yarns you need most of.

    • Busy rows at a glance, since a row with more runs means more strands to carry.

    • Right side and wrong side marked on every row, whether you work flat or in the round.

    Questions

    Tapestry crochet pattern maker FAQ

Is the tapestry crochet pattern maker free?

Yes. Designing tapestry, pixel and graphgan charts and getting the written rows is free, with no sign-up. A free account saves up to 5 charts, with up to 50 colors each, and downloads them as PDF, PNG or SVG with no watermark.

What is the difference between tapestry, pixel and graphgan crochet?

All three are worked from a grid chart where each square is one stitch in one color. Tapestry crochet carries the unused colors inside the stitches. Pixel crochet treats each square as a pixel, so designs look like pixel art. A graphgan is a blanket worked from a graph, often with a separate strand or bobbin for each block of color.

How many colors should a tapestry crochet row have?

As few as the design allows. Every color in a row is another strand to carry, so most tapestry designs keep to two or three. The written rows list each color run, so you can see at a glance which rows are busy.

How big will my graphgan be?

It depends on your gauge. At 15 stitches and 17 rows to 4 inches, a 120 × 140 chart comes out at about 32.0 × 32.9 in. Charts go up to 200 × 200; enter your own gauge in the editor to see your finished size.

Does it tell me how much yarn I need?

It tells you how many stitches use each color, in the legend, which shows which yarns you need most of. It does not estimate yardage, since that depends on your yarn, hook and tension.

Can I crochet the chart in the round?

Yes. Choose rows worked in one direction for the round, or flat rows that turn at each end, starting from the bottom or the top. The written instructions follow the direction you pick and mark right-side and wrong-side rows.

Can I make a pixel or tapestry pattern from a photo?

Yes. Upload a photo and StitchOwl converts it into a colorwork chart, with a color count you choose and a cleanup for stray single stitches. You can then edit it square by square like any other chart. The conversion runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
